Functional pigments for autonomous environments

Improving Lidar Signal Response from Dark Colors

Viewers located in China can watch the video here.

Lidar's detection challenge for black and dark colored objects

Traditional carbon black pigments strongly absorb near-infrared lidar signals used by autonomous vehicles for navigation. Low lidar signal return erodes object detection capability particularly for darker colored objects that contain higher levels of carbon black. Automotive coating formulations using NIR transparent or reflective functional black pigments deliver superior signal response thereby improving object detection as documented in this simple demonstration.

Managing the physics of autonomous sensing

Optimizing coating response to visual, near-infrared, ultrasonic and radio electromagnetic radiation requires an understanding of the physics involved. Learn how appropriate pigment selection and coating stack design can substantially improve autonomous vehicle signal response.

Functional black pigments

Black pigments are vital formulation tools but traditional carbon black pigments largely absorb lidar's signal. Dark and black shades with good lidar response are possible using functional black pigments.
